An Unexpected Call in the Winter
On a cold, snowy night in December 2006, Bob was preparing for his visit to the radio station the following morning. Unexpectedly, his wife received a call from BoatUS Insurance inquiring about a potential claim on their boat. With their vessel stored at Lake of the Ozarks, the call came as a surprise. Through subsequent conversations with the marina owner, they learned that the marina's roof had collapsed overnight due to heavy ice, snow, and wind, damaging their boat, which bore the brunt of the collapse due to its height.
The Path to Restoration
Bob immediately contacted BoatUS and spoke with David Wiggins, their Marine Adjuster, who was already on his way to assess the damage. Upon their arrival, they found their dream boat, a 1989 36 Aft Cabin Carver, had sustained significant damage, with repair costs estimated at $50,000. A meticulous 18-month process of finding parts and planning renovations ensued, eventually restoring their beloved vessel to its former glory.
The Birth of a Radio Show
During the search for boat parts online, Mo, Bob's first mate, suggested creating a website to share their findings. This idea quickly evolved into launching a radio show about boating, leveraging Bob’s radio background. Despite finding only two existing boat shows, one in the far Northeast and another in San Diego, Bob saw a unique opportunity. Thus, "Bob's No Wake Zone Boating Radio Show" was born. It initially aired on Clinton, Missouri, radio stations, eventually building a substantial online audience.
A Show for Every Boater
The show's philosophy revolves around discussing all topics related to recreational boating, from kayaks to cruise ships. It features safety education, product reviews, boat shows, interviews with key industry personnel, and more—reaching an international audience through the Internet.
A Life Anchored in Boating
Since relocating to Lake of the Ozarks and beginning to air on KRMS Radio Osage Beach in March 2014, Bob, Mo, and their dog, Mayz, spend nearly 45 weekends a year on their boat. Grateful for the support from MarineMax, BoatUS, Polylift, Smart Plug, Dock Works, BioKleen, Dock Box Guy and TowBoatUS, Bob continues to engage with his audience through various channels.
A Journey Through The Waves
Bob and Mo's boating journey began in 1974, and they have seven different boats, starting with a 14-foot Lund tri-hull. Their dedication to boating education and safety is evident in completing various courses, and Bob earned his OUPV captain's license in 2014. Having experienced liveaboard life on Grand Lake and Lake of the Ozarks, they continue to share their passion for boating with listeners worldwide.
